EDA THESS’ Ceremony for the 20 years of its presence in the Greek Market

EDA THESS sealed the 20 years of activity in the natural gas market in the regions of Thessaloniki and Thessaly in a special commemorative event held Thursday 11.04.19 in Thessaloniki and Larissa through live satellite streaming. In the presence of the General Manager of EDA THESS Mr. Leonidas Bakouras, the CEO of DEPA, Mr. Dimitrios Tzortzis, the Chairman of the BoD of EDA THESS, Mr. Venetios Bouras and members of the BoD of EDA THESS. On behalf of the shareholder ENI Gas e Luce, the greeting of the CEO Mr. Alberto Chiarini, was broadcasted. There was also a dynamic presence of the Company's employees in Thessaloniki and Larissa.

The event was greeted by the Deputy Minister of Energy and Environment, Mr. Socrates Famellos, the Macedonia-Thrace Deputy Minister, Mrs. Eleftheria Hatzigeorgiou, the Regional Governor, Mr. Apostolos Tzitzikostas, the President of the Regional Union of Municipalities of Thessaloniki, Mr. Lazaros Kyrizoglou, the Former Minister of Environment and Development, Mr. Ioannis Maniatis and the Former Deputy Minister of Development, Mr. George Salagkoudis.

The event was honored by the presence of, the Division Head Subsidiaries follow up of DEPA, Mrs. Kyriaki Karakitsou and the Executive Director Coordinating Division Financial Activities Mrs. Maria Fantridaki who also greeted, the Deputy Governor Mrs. Voula Patoulidou, the Deputy Governor of Development and Environment, Constantinos Gioutikas, the Mayor of Thermaikos, Mr. Giannis Mavromatis, the Mayor of Pilea - Chortiatis, Mr. Ignatios Kaitetzidis, the Mayor of Chalkidona, Mr. Ioannis Tsouknidas, the member of parliament of the ND Mr. Theodoros Karaoglou and the member of the parliament of the KINAL Mr. George Arvanitides.

 

In Larissa, greeted the event, the President of the Regional Council of Thessaly, Mr. Gregorios Papacharalambous, the President of the Regional Union of Municipalities of Thessaly Mr. George Kotsos, the Mayor of Tyrnavos, Mr. Panagiotis Sarchosis, the Mayor of Elassona, Mr. Nicolaos Evangelou the Mayor of Meteora, Mr. Christos Sinanis and the President of Municipal Council of Larissa, Mr. Dimitrios Tachos. The event was attended by the President of the Municipal Council of Kileler, Mr. Vardakoulis Achilleas.

 

Through a brief historical flashback, the key points that contributed to the establishment of the Company and its’ promotion to a point of reference, for the local communities in its’ operational regions and in the natural gas energy sector in Greece, were pointed out.

The General Manager of EDA THESS, Mr. Leonidas Bakouras reported that, in 2000 with the largest, at the time, energy investment in Greece of initial capital of 386, 3 mil. €, the Supply Companies were established, and the Distribution Licenses were granted in Thessaloniki and Thessaly. In the early years of operation, the Companies faced a multitude of challenges, as consumers were unaware of the new kind of energy, while there was lack of a technical framework of regulations and a limited distribution network.

During the period of 2000 - 2006 the progressive investments amounted up to 308.2 mil. €. The majority of the investment capitals is banded for the construction of network expansion, long-term investments that yield return over time.

In the following years, amid the economic downturn, the Company, with the full support of the investors, DEPA and the global giant of Eni, continues to invest in networks and new cost-effective connections at a steady pace, while building a relationship of trust with the consumers and improving the level of its services.

In 2016, after the entry into force of the law that imposed the reform of the natural gas market, in just four months, record time not only for the Greek, but also for the European standards, the corporate transformation was completed and on 30.12.16, EDA THESS is established.

During the period 2017 – 2018, the Company, remaining faithful to its values ​​and always acting with consistency and by planning, concluded 43.403 new connection contracts with the progressive number amounting to 338.153 on 31.12.2018, expanded its network by 190 km with the total network up to 2.323 km, resulting from new investments of € 43.9 million and progressive investments of € 546 million. At the same time, taking initiatives and advantage of the high level of specialization and know-how, it contributes decisively to the elimination of the energy exclusion of remote areas through the issuance of the technical framework and their supply with the usage of compressed natural gas (CNG).

Mr. Bakouras highlighted that, by implementing modern and efficient management, a chain that ensures the success of the Company is created, where all the parties involved: Shareholders, employees and consumers benefit from the development of the activity of EDA THESS.

Concluding his speech, the General Manager pointed out that, based on the many years of experience and according to the five-year plan of the Company, in 2023, 65% of the population of Thessaloniki and Thessaly will use natural gas. At the same time, new investments of € 93.3 million are foreseen to extend the network by an additional 301 kilometers.

In his speech, the CEO of ENI Gas e Luce, Mr. Chiarini reported that EDA THESS is an example of a fruitful and perfect partnership that manages to combine the respect for society and the development of activity for the benefit of citizens with fair economic efficiency. He stressed that the Company will decisively contribute to the transition to energy and to the reduction of the environmental footprint. Finally, he expressed his confidence that by preserving the values ​​and principles "The next twenty years will be 20 years of success, and beyond."

The CEO of DEPA, Mr. Tzortzis welcomed the positive results and the Company’s growth, highlighting that DEPA fully supports EDA THESS’ investments plan for the expansion of the natural gas network in existing and new areas of the License in the Regional Unit of Thessaloniki and in the Region of Thessaly, as well as the initiatives undertaken by EDA THESS and the innovative actions that it implements. Mr. Tzortzis stressed that, "DEPA as a shareholder will always be on the side of EDA THESS in order to assist to the implementation of its policy, which is summarized in more and more growth, to even more households in new and existing areas. The cooperation between DEPA, the shareholder ENI and the Company’s management, is a role model, that is an excellent example to follow."

The Chairman of the BoD of EDA THESS, Mr. Bouras, during his greeting pointed out that, the Company responds to consumers’ requests “in consistency” and demonstrates severity to the matters of safety of installations and gas distribution. According to him, "The word “model” used to describe the Company is not an exaggeration, it has been given by third parties" and continued "The Company constantly invests in infrastructure and the most advanced technological equipment for these purposes." And stressed that "the significant work that the Company has to show is resulting from the work of the Management and its employees, as well as from the good cooperation with RAE, Local Government, the Region and the Ministerial services." Mr. Bouras also, mentioned that "the Company is a successful example of public-private partnership with tangible results."

At the end of the event, the 1st General Manager of the Company (2000 to 2006), Mr. Umberto Reni was awarded, as well as consumer categories, social groups performing work of charity, students, the Company’s employees with the longest term of service and the children of its employees, who excelled in the academic year 2017 – 2018, in Thessaloniki and Thessaly.

The ceremony was successfully completed with EDA THESS looking forward to the future with optimism until ... 2043, which is the time horizon of its Licenses.
